I thought it was great.” Simon Best

Elfrida
£8.50 (+£1.50 p&p) from Susan Hartshorne, 4 Beeforth
Close, New Earswick, York, YO32 4DF Elfrida Vipont wrote over 40 books. Some are serious books about Quakerism; some were written for teenagers - adventure stories or biographies of famous authors; and some are suitable for much younger readers. She was awarded a Carnegie Medal for The Lark on the Wing, and her book for reading to the very young, The Elephant and the Bad Baby, has become a classic. However, not many of her readers know that Elfrida trained first as a professional singer and that she spent the war years as headmistress of a school for evacuees. Only after that did she turn to writing as a full time career. Elfrida was also an inspiring lecturer, speaking both about her books and also on Quaker subjects. Many remember her inspirational addresses. This is the story of her life.
The second volume in Daphne Wright's adventure trilogy for young and old. Highly recommended for children's bedtime reading. (See below for The Journey Through the Forest.)
History of Breckenbrough School
Quaker influence in an educational experiment By Rob Knox Reviewed by Joyce Pickard
£ The book takes a light-hearted look at Fair Trade. It tells the story of how Jeremy became involved in fair trade, what fair trade is all about and what it's like to be a fair trade buyer; from the supplier who made a lathe from an old washing machine in Sri Lanka, to the peasants who gave him roast guinea pig for lunch in Ecuador, to the house with the tree growing through it in India. It also tells the story of how SHARED EARTH grew from an unknown shop in York to the UK's largest fair trade retailer. It poses questions too. Is fair trade a long term trend or a short term fashion? Will there be a fair trade label for crafts as well as food? Is global warming a more important problem than poverty?
